'Perverse' signs are smear politics

In this campaign season, there are now anonymous signs dotting Ramapo which suggest that Preserve Ramapo's legitimate campaign to challenge Ramapo Town Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence's administration is somehow racist and anti-Semitic. (The signs read, in part, "Save our town from Perverse Ramapo's Racist Agenda!!")

These accusations should be an affront to any citizen of the community. To somehow imply that support of Preserve Ramapo makes one anti-Semitic is outrageous and ought to be denounced by the Democrats and Supervisor St. Lawrence. But, to date, I have heard nothing from either. Such anonymous accusations are an act of cowardice that only further debase an already ugly campaign season. They do nothing to inform the electorate or educate the citizenry.

Smear is the last refuge of political scoundrels who have nothing substantial to add to the political debate. The citizens of Ramapo deserve better. In the name of decency, I would hope that Ramapo's voters reject such scare tactics and ad hominem attacks.
