Quarry site again a burden for Suffern

August 6, 2008  The Journal News

This is in response to Roy Tschudy's absurd Friday letter, "Quarry Ridge plan benefits village."

Tilcon New York gave the quarry to the town, and Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said it would be used for flood mitigation, recreation or open space. St. Lawrence then turns around and sells the property to a developer for $4.4 million, and a promise by the developer to spend $2.5 million for flood mitigation for our neighbors whose homes are in a flood zone. (How did that happen, anyway?) St. Lawrence might as well have given the property away for nothing. It is not even close to market value, even in these hard times in the real estate market

Village residents had to put up with Tilcon's loaded trucks pulling out onto Route 59, creating traffic delays, and air and noise pollution for more than 50 years.

Maybe the Village of Suffern should take back the property through process of eminent domain.
