PUBLIC PARTICIPATION PERIOD: One Speaker—Robert Romanowski. Spoke about the feature on the Channel 11 News at 10pm with reporter Mary Murphy where NYC Fireman Jeff Cool who was seriously injured in a Bronx Fire due to illegal conversions along with Gordon Wren are starting a program to identify illegal conversions, said that the Town should cooperate. Said that landlords who illegally convert put money and profit ahead of human safety and allow their tenants to live in unsafe quarters.
Also, due to the fact that the Town allows properties that are "in violation" to bring cases to the Planning and Zoning Boards, there is no deterrent to give a landlord "second thoughts" about converting.
Asked the Town to pass a local law that would prevent any property that is "in violation" from having their cases heard by the Planning or Zoning Board until all violations were corrected. This would accomplish two things:
Would require the property owner to spend money that was illegally gained to convert the property back to a non-violation condition.
May serve as a deterrent as a property owner may
realize that when caught, it will cost them considerable dollars to make
the necessary changes.
